Florence, Al Sept 21, 2025
Another very historical stop. Major Civil War history. Cruise provided a nice “Hop on Hop off” bus tour of the city and historic sites. Most notable was “Popes Tavern”, a Civil War hospital, now serving as a museum. Previously shared the Shiloh War Casualties, learning here the total Civil War Deaths was reported as 620,000. Wow!! Also, area noted for Slavery history, some very sad stories. Another historic site a “Frank Loyd Wright” house built for the Rosenbaum family. A special “Usonian” design. Very interesting guided tour.
The Afternoon, Tours related to Native American history. First stop “The Stone talker’s Story”. Amazing story, a Tom Hendrix dedicated 33 yrs to building the largest /longest un-mortared stone wall in the country in a dedicated memorial to his great, great, grandmother. Hard to ge my head around. Followed by visiting Native American Indian mound.
Evening, leaving Florence, entering a 94 ft Lock called “Wilson Lock”. Awesome!!
